A expansion joint is a flexible component that effectively compensates for axial deformation. For instance, expansion joints welded onto the shell of fixed-tube-sheet heat exchangers exhibit high axial flexibility and are prone to deformation, allowing them to absorb the thermal expansion differences between the tubes and the shell caused by varying wall temperatures. This helps reduce the axial loads on both components, thereby minimizing thermal stress differences in the tubes, tube sheets, and shell—and ultimately preventing potential failures such as strength degradation, instability, or tube pull-out damage. There are several types of expansion joints, with commonly used designs including bellows-type, ring-plate welded, and clamp-shell structures. Among these, bellows-type expansion joints are widely applied, while ring-plate welded expansion joints are typically suited only for applications involving atmospheric or low-pressure conditions.
